Presentation for 35th Anniversary in 2019 started a remarkable and rewarding journey for me. It immersed me in the rich history of Jews in the Upper Midwest. And to be able to hear my words read by the amazing
Peter Coyote was a highlight of my career.
This film was presented at the opening of an exhibit at the beginning of 2023 at the JCC of the Twin Cities.
What started as a way of allowing poor, working class children the chance to breath fresh air, became an institution of Jewish life, learning and building of community and lifelong friendships.
The story of one, particular AZA chapter in Minneapolis in 1956 is one of friendship that has lasted, in some cases, for 75 years. These men not only shared their youth, but still enjoy friendship and camaraderie as they mark their collective 80th birthdays.
In what was decided by a pin dropped on a map, Aberdeen became the crossroads of the Midwest via the rail lines that met there. And not long after the town was incorporated, Jews became part of the growth and history.
For the smaller, remote towns in the harsh environment of Minnesota's North country, Jews helped settle and create the towns that would go on to supply the country as it built its cities with steel.
